Michael Massong, trombone
Trombonist Michael Massong, was born in 1969 in Germany.
After his first studies in Frankfurt, Germany he then continued his education at the Royal College in London. His teachers were John Iveson (Royal Opera House Covent Garden) and Christopher Mowat (BBC Symphony).
From 1989 until 1992 he was a student at the annual summer master classes of the prominent Swedish Trombone soloist Christian Lindberg.
He completed his studies in New York with New York Philharmonic’s principal trombonist Joseph Alessi, professor at the Juilliard School of Music.
Further teachers were the legendary Brass teacher Arnold Jacobs at the Northwestern University in Chicago, and Chicago Symphonies bass trombonist Charles Vernon.
After having held principal trombone positions in the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra between 1992 and 1994, and then in the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra between 1994 and 1997 his love for Scandinavia took him to Denmark where he is still serving as principal trombonist in the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra.
Michael Massonghas been a regular guest trombonist in many international orchestras such as the London Philharmonic and the Liverpool Philharmonic UK, the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway, the Singapore Symphony, the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin, the Luxembourg State Philharmonic, German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Cologne Opera (Gürzenich Orchestra), Germany and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, just to name a few.
Michael is very active as a worldwide soloist and teacher.
His activities include regular soloconcerts and master classes in Germany, Japan, South-Korea, China, Singapore, Spain, Slovenia, USA, as well as the Moscow and St. Petersburg State Conservatory in Russia.
As a guest soloist he performs at international brass and trombone festivals:
-2007 at the Jeju Brass Festival in South Korea,
-2009 at the first Russian trombone festival in Moscow,
-2010 at the International Trombone Festival by the international trombone association (ITA) at the University of Texas in Austin USA, and the Singapore “Brass Explosion”.
Michael Massongplays exclusively on “Thein Brass Instruments”.
In close cooperation with Max and Heinrich Thein, he has successfully developed a line of tenor and alto trombones.
His first CD, “The Lyrical Trombone” is expected to be released in the beginning of 2012 by the German classical label MDG.
